Francesca di Rimini is 60 meter German transport ship, which sank transporting the ammunition in 1944, near the Kaprije island. The exact cause of sinking is not known, but probably was torpedoed by flying British fighter planes. As a result of explosion the ship lost a considerable part of the starboard. The shipwreck lies at the bottom slightly leaning to the left side, at a depth up to 52 meters. A lift mast is the highest point ((the ship has 3) which is on a level of 28 meters; however the deck begins at 40 meters. The place you have to reach by boat – it is marked with buoy, from which leads mooring line. At favorable conditions it is possible to notice remains of the ship already from the level of 15-25 meters below the surface. Exploding the wreck it is possible to observe the damage caused by torpedo. It is not allowed to explore the cargo hold, but from the outside it is already possible to notice remains secured with the net of transported ammunition. Remains of the transport ship are very well preserved, in places covered by colorful sponges. The underwater life is worth of our attention. In surroundings it is possible to come across of various species of fish, e.g. schools of mackerel and perches. There are also larger specimens of scorpion fishes and sea eels. This place is perfect for underwater photography; however it is necessary to be aware of the strong light.
