Wreck description:

Giuseppe Garibaldi is 112 meters Italian armoured cruiser built in Genoa at the end of the 19th century. It served from 1901, demonstrating the presence of the Italian fleet on the Mediterranean Sea. It was often used as a flagship. It participated in many sea battles – during the Italian-Turkish war it f bombarded the positions of Turkish armies in Cyrenaica and Tripolitania; it sank also Turkish armoured ship and motor torpedo boat. During the World War I participated in the fire of railway lines on the Austria coast. It was sunk on July 18, 1915 by the Austro-Hungarian U-4 submarine during the attack on the line near Raguza. Some sources state that it went down in only three minutes. From 550 crew members, 53 died. Giuseppe Garibaldi wreck after years of searching was found and identified by the group of divers in 2009. It is the deepest located shipwreck, which so far was discovered in this part of the Adriatic. It lies on the mudbank at 122 meters, so it is suitable only for technical diving. It grounded upside down, tilted slightly to the right side. The superstructure was crushed and a stern is also broken, partly destroyed. On the lowest storey of the ship it is possible to notice a weapon covered by sea deposit. The wreck is densely covered by corals, sponges and algae, and in the stern fishing nets are lying. In this place it is necessary to pay attention to strong currents.
