Wreck description:

For a long time this wreck was called “Istra”. Only relatively recently managed to establish that it is Hans Schmidt, i.e. a cargo ship built in 1920 in Netherlands. Its name derives from the last owner, Heinrich Schmidt. The ship sank transporting the weapon and ammunition in 1943, as a result of hitting a mine. The explosion broke it into two parts – the bow is distant 10 meters from the rest of wreck. Taking into account the time spent under water, the ship is very well preserved, which is a real attraction for divers. Steel parts are almost intact. There is a unique type of anchor, withdrawn from the production of more than 100 years ago. Divers should pay attention to fishing nets and not to swim into the shipwreck. As the remains of ship are under protection of Croatian Ministry of the Culture, diving is possible only via authorized diving centers with special permission.
